4 Facts about the Gospel of John:

  1. Gospel of John is different than Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The Gospel of John omits the Temptations of Christ, the Transfiguration, and the institution of the “Lord’s Supper”. There is no casting out of demons talked about in John, no Sermon on the Mount, nor the Lord’s Prayer.
  2. The greatest miracle of Jesus is only mentioned in the Gospel of John.
  3. The Apostle John the brother of James is not the writer of this Gospel.
    1. Some scholars consider the work anonymous.
    1. The writer was most certainly a Jew, but not John the Fisher man
    1. There will be a side quest, if you choose, to uncover who possibly was the writer of the 4th Gospel
  4.  The verb “believe” is all throughout the book of John, 98 times, but the word faith is never used.

Read John1:1 – Ask yourself:

  • Where have you heard “In the beginning”?
  • The Word was with God and the Word was God. – What is the meaning? The Word was God and with God?
    • Genesis 15:1 – The Word came to Abram. Physically, something came to talk with Abram.
    • Psalms 33:6 – The Word created something.
    • Jeremiah 1:4 – The Word came to me saying…
  • Who was the Word?

Read John 1: 2-3 – Ask yourself:

  • The universe, earth and everything on the earth was made through whom?
  • He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made
    • By the authority of His Word brought creation into being
    • God’s Word immediately and completely accomplishes all that is declared. Why?
      • Isaiah 55:10-11 – Who is God’s Word?

Read John 1: 4-5 – Ask yourself:

  • In Jesus there is life, and “the” life was the light of men. Why is Jesus light?
    • What is darkness?
      • Joshua 24:7 “…put darkness between you and the Egyptians”
      • 1 Samuel 2:9 “…shall be cut off in darkness”
      • Nahum 1:8 “…pursue his enemies into darkness”
      • Colossians 1:13 “…domain of darkness”
